Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the official, following the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
