European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
